    I’m Building my Vanity!

I’ve been whining about needing a vanity for a while now…but I’ve been just a little bit indecisive. I have a board on Pinterest where I’ve pinned a few desks that look similar to what I have in mind for my bedroom as far as style is concerned.

I was bouncing between a parsons desk,

    something with an x-leg,

or even some type of mix between the two.

Ana White has plans for a version of each, but I settled on the x-leg.

I did a partially assembled dry run with the desk in the space, and I have to say I’m very pleased.

I haven’t decided whether or not I want to add the drawer, but for now, I’m planning on leaving it off.

My mom is still at my house visiting. She was impressed, and I felt good. Please excuse the sloppiness, it’ll be more polished once I go in and do the editing, paint, and actually put it together properly.

I’m trying to get things in order so that I start the new year off on the right foot.

So far, I am on a roll.

I hope that you have a wonderful new year, and that you end 2011 on a high note.

    Fjellse turned storage bed?

    I am an amateur DIYer.

My first few projects were built with simple tools mainly because I was terrified to use my circular saw. ..but whatever, they were practice projects just to get my feel wet.

I used a jigsaw to make the cuts for my son's toy box, and to cut the backing for his bed. I even used it to cut a few pieces for the underside of the dining room table.

Anyway, as a result of my lackluster cutting ability, and a few mistakes I should have corrected  immediately,

the profile of the bed annoys me would be better if it weren’t visible.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve begun to compile a list of build projects for the next few months.  And when I saw this pretty, but massive bed, I

thought this might be the solution. Not buying the bed, but adding more storage to to the current one.

I think for the space we have, this may be too big, but something  more along the lines of this one

    image

or even some type of combination of the two would be great. In a kid’s room, the more spaces they have to stuff stuff the better.

    Or maybe not.

This looks a bit like overkill to me…but then again, I guess everyone’s needs are different.

    A Loft Desk in Miniature

Today I was browsing the Home Decorators site, as I often do, and I came across this desk.

    image

It’s so simple, and that blue is so pretty.

I was looking for a bit of inspiration because my little superhero was in need of a little workstation, and this pretty little thing right here was just what I needed. It looked simple enough to mimic, so I did.

I had some leftover 2x12 pieces from my Lack-a-like project, and paint leftover from his bed and toy box, so other than a little bit of my time, this didn’t cost me anything to build.

I decided to make the top overhang a bit on the sides, and skipped sanding out the dents and dings, and I have to say, I am pleased with it. No, actually, I love it.

I still need to add a couple of corner braces on the underside to give it more stability, but I’ll get to it another day. (If you look closely, you can see one in the Home Decorators pic.)

It isn’t wide enough for the taller books and notebooks, but he uses it mainly for puzzles, games, and coloring. But it’s thin and light enough to move to the center of the room when I need to put a tarp down for crafts and art projects. It’s simple and fits in well with the other pieces in his room. And that blue! Makes me smile every time I see it.

I’m really starting to like the way things are looking in here…well when it’s clean anyway. The blues, greens, greys and blacks give it a really nice feel. It’s my favorite room so far…but that could be because it’s the only one that’s close to completion.

Anyway, that’s all for now. Talk to you in the next one!
